Thornicroft’s Giraffe and feathered friends, ( Red-billed Oxpecker)

The Thornicroft's Giraffe is unique to the Luangwa Valley and occurs nowhere else in Africa. It is an isolated sub-species, with approximately 800 giraffe on the east side of the river and 30 on the west side. They have dark brown neck patches which develop in the adult males contrasting with the glossy black of the body patches. It was usual to see a number of Red-billed Oxpecker sitting on board for a tasty bite and in turn the giraffe would appreciate having any ticks and other grubs being dispatched by these diligent passengers.
