My tent was set on the opposite bank of the Luangwa, where it was the elephants' chosen spot for coming down to the river to drink, dust themselves down and socialise, before wading across to amble through camp. The elephants did this most days which gave me unqualified access to observe and sketch these gentle giants to my heart's content.
These highly intelligent creatures speak their own language, express emotion, show empathy and have the ability to sense their own mortality. After spending a great deal of time in their presence I could not fail to recognise their shared sentience and acknowledge many characteristics so like our own.
