My guide had been told of a lion kill right at the edge of the Chobe river in Chobe National Park, so we went by a small speed boat to make good time and to allow a better sighting from the water side.
It was the largest number of lions I had ever seen together, as some feasted on the caress, while other pride members relaxed contentedly along the sandy riverbanks and some cubs had fun having play tussles with each other while others were being licked clean by the lioness or were suckling.
It was a shock to realise that the pride had brought down a juvenile elephant, but this kill would sustain the lion family for a few days and there would be plenty for the younger cubs as well.
The boat allowed a perfect uninterrupted close sighting, which was at the cats level and gave time for some sketching because of the safe vantage point and the lions' calm temperament, not being bothered by our presence. It was a breath-taking experience.
